Vietnam steps up renewable energy ties with IRENA in Abu Dhabi

 Vietnam is completing procedures to join IRENA, signaling a strong commitment to renewable energy and a just, sustainable energy transition.

On September 24, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long met with Antonio Bernardini, Ambassador and Chief of Staff of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi during a high-level Vietnamese delegation’s visit to the UAE. The delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long had a working session with Mr. Antonio Bernardini, Ambassador, Chief of Office of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long praised IRENA’s role in promoting international cooperation on renewables and acknowledged the agency’s support for Vietnam’s accession process. He said Vietnam is finalizing internal procedures to soon submit its instrument of accession and become a full member of IRENA, underscoring the country’s strong commitment to renewable energy and a just, sustainable energy transition.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasized that joining IRENA is a step demonstrating Vietnam's strong commitment to promoting renewable energy development and a fair and sustainable energy transition.

The Deputy Minister proposed IRENA’s continued support in several areas, including renewable energy certificates (RECs), mobilizing green finance and international partners for offshore wind, solar power and smart grids, as well as cooperation on green hydrogen, storage batteries, and technical solutions for high-renewable power systems. 

He also highlighted Vietnam’s interest in ASEAN grid interconnection and cross-border power trade, and called on IRENA to work with ADB, the World Bank and other partners to mobilize financing for JETP (Just Energy Transition Partnership) projects in Vietnam.

IRENA’s representative welcomed Vietnam’s strong commitment and confirmed that once Vietnam becomes a full member, the agency will be ready to develop concrete cooperation programs to support the country’s energy transition.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasized that joining IRENA is a step demonstrating Vietnam's strong commitment to promoting renewable energy development and a fair and sustainable energy transition.

The meeting reaffirmed Vietnam’s determination to be an active member of IRENA, contributing to global renewable energy development, energy security and sustainable growth both regionally and worldwide.
