Work starts on Laos-Vietnam power transmission line

Vietnam’s public electricity utility EVN has commenced construction on the Vietnamese section of a 220kV transmission line between Nam Mo (Laos) and Tuong Duong in the central province of Nghe An.

The line runs more than 74 kilometres and is designed to transmit electricity from the Nam Mo Hydropower Plant in Laos to Vietnam as part of a bilateral agreement on energy development between the two countries.

Under the agreement, Vietnam will import 3,000 megawatts of electricity from Laos until 2025 and then up to 5,000 megawatts until 2030.

This is the second project to serve the import of electricity from Laos to Vietnam, following the Xekaman 1-Pleiku 2 line, and is expected to help ensure power supply for northern Vietnam in the coming years.

The transmission line in Vietnam runs through the districts of Tuong Duong and Ky Son in Nghe An Province and is scheduled for completion in August 2022, which coincides with the completion of the Nam Mo Hydropower Plant.

The cost of the project is estimated at 588 billion VND (25.9 million USD) and is being undertaken by EVN.
