Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, took part in and accompanied the Party General Secretary in the delegation’s official activities, making significant contributions to promoting cooperation in all areas, particularly in economic development, trade, industry, and energy between Vietnam and Indonesia.

At the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse paid an official visit to Indonesia and the ASEAN Secretariat from March 9-11. Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation participated in and accompanied the Party General Secretary in the delegation’s official activities.

This event holds great significance, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening and developing its strategic partnership with Indonesia while also demonstrating Vietnam’s active role in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asia), promoting multilateral cooperation, and contributing to the overall development of the region.

Visit to the ASEAN Secretariat, official welcome ceremony, and high-ranking talks in Indonesia

On the morning of March 10, 2025, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation accompanied Party General Secretary To Lam at the official welcome ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat and a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and the ASEAN Permanent Representative Committee. During the meeting, both sides discussed ASEAN’s central role in the region, commitments to fostering intra-bloc cooperation, and initiatives on connectivity, digital transformation, and sustainable development.

In the afternoon, in Jakarta, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation accompanied Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse to the official welcome ceremony hosted by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The ceremony took place in a solemn and respectful atmosphere, reflecting Indonesia’s special regard for its strategic partnership with Vietnam.

Immediately after the ceremony, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien attended the high-ranking talks between Party General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions on regional and international issues, assessed the outstanding achievements in bilateral cooperation, and agreed on major directions to enhance comprehensive cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, trade, industry, and energy.

Both sides also emphasized the importance of promoting economic and trade cooperation, improving competitiveness, and supporting businesses from both countries in accessing each other’s markets.

Vietnam, Indonesia sign cooperation documents

In the presence of Party General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto, the two sides exchanged several important cooperation documents. Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto exchanged a Letter of Intent on Cooperation in Capacity Building in Technical and Digital Economy, paving the way for extensive collaboration in workforce training, technology transfer, and the development of creative industries.

As part of the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also attended Party General Secretary To Lam’s meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the People’s Consultative Assembly, and the Speaker of the Regional Representative Council.

During these meetings, both sides discussed measures to enhance cooperation between their legislative bodies, emphasizing the importance of experience-sharing, policy coordination, and improving the legal framework to facilitate bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

Both sides also agreed to continue close coordination in regional and international parliamentary forums, contributing to peace, stability, and overall development within ASEAN.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien attends Business Dialogue and meets with major Indonesian corporations and enterprises

As part of the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation attended the Vietnam-Indonesia Business Dialogue and witnessed the signing ceremony of cooperation agreements between enterprises from both countries.

At the dialogue, leading businesses from Vietnam and Indonesia presented their development plans and aspirations to strengthen bilateral cooperation, contributing to the advancement of Vietnam-Indonesia relations.

The event also served as an important platform for businesses to explore investment opportunities and expand partnerships in key sectors, such as trade, manufacturing, renewable energy, digital technology, and logistics. Discussions highlighted the achievements in economic cooperation, investment prospects, and strategic partnerships in emerging sectors, such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital economy, green energy, electric vehicles, and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Additionally, businesses explored cooperation in food security, the Halal industry, education, and maritime industry, reflecting the deepening relationship between the two nations. They reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable growth, innovation, and regional cooperation, laying the groundwork for a stronger future.

During the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also attended meetings between Party General Secretary To Lam and executives from major Indonesian corporations, including Ciputra Group (real estate, urban infrastructure), Alamtri Resources Indonesia (energy, mining), Goto Technology Group (digital technology), Sungai Budi Group (agricultural and food processing), and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

The leaders of these Indonesian corporations expressed their keen interest in enhancing investment and seeking business opportunities with Vietnamese enterprises, leveraging the strengths and potential of both sides. They voiced confidence in the long-term and sustainable cooperation prospects between businesses from the two countries.

Upgrading Vietnam-Indonesia relations to comprehensive strategic partnership, targeting US$18 billion in bilateral trade

Building on the strong foundation of traditional friendship, mutual understanding, and strategic trust, as well as shared interests and priorities for regional security, prosperity, and sustainable development, Party General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto announced the elevation of Vietnam-Indonesia relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The official visit of Party General Secretary To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation has opened new avenues for cooperation, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to fostering substantive and sustainable bilateral ties, contributing to regional peace, stability, and development.

Indonesia is currently one of Vietnam’s most important trading partners in Southeast Asia. In 2024, the bilateral trade value reached US$16.7 billion, marking a 21.2 percent increase compared to 2023. Both countries are working towards the goal of raising bilateral trade to US$18 billion in the near future.
