Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long receives British Ambassador

On October 7, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long had a working session with the British Ambassador to Vietnam on promoting energy cooperation.

Attending the talks were representatives from several functional departments of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, including the Department of Foreign Market Development, the Electricity Authority of Vietnam, and the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industry Promotion.

During the talks, the two sides held in-depth discussions on priority areas of cooperation in the coming period, particularly within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long and the British Ambassador to Vietnam discuss priority areas for cooperation, especially under the JETP framework.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasized that Vietnam considers the JETP a key pillar in realizing its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while also opening up new opportunities for cooperation between Vietnam and its development partners, including the United Kingdom, one of the active members of the International Partners Group (IPG).

The Deputy Minister noted that the UK and other international partners had proposed a list of potential JETP projects in areas such as renewable energy, offshore wind power, energy storage, green technology, and technical assistance. These areas align with Vietnam’s orientation towards sustainable energy development, emission reduction, and industrial transformation. Technical officials from both sides will continue close coordination to ensure effective implementation in the period ahead.

Ambassador Lain Frew commended Vietnam’s progress in promoting energy transition cooperation within the JETP framework and affirmed that the United Kingdom stands ready to accompany Vietnam in mobilizing international resources, sharing experience, and providing technical support for the implementation of JETP projects.

The Ambassador added that several British financial and investment institutions, including the British International Investment (BII) and the UK Export Finance (UKEF), are interested in and ready to participate in financing JETP projects. British officials proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation to formalize the framework of future collaboration.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long agreed that both sides would continue close coordination in preparing the Memorandum of Understanding and related documents on green energy transition cooperation, ahead of the upcoming high-level visit, to reaffirm the Vietnam - UK strategic partnership in the new era.
